The Boston Celtics acquired rookie guard John Tonje from the Utah Jazz ahead of the trade deadline on Thursday, the team announced in a press release.

The Celtics sent forward Chris Boucher, a future second-round pick and cash considerations to the Jazz in a move that helped the team get under the luxury tax. The Jazz are expected to waive Boucher, allowing him to sign with a playoff contender.

In addition to offloading Boucher, the Celtics also moved Josh Minott to Brooklyn and Xavier Tillman to Charlotte. The front office has saved approximately $325 million in payroll and taxes since the start of last offseason to get under both aprons, according to Yossi Gozlan on X.

Tonje, the 53rd overall pick, signed a two-way contract with the Jazz after five seasons in college. He was a consensus second-team All-American last season at Wisconsin, averaging 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 38.8% shooting from 3-point range.

The 24-year-old has spent most of the season in the G League, averaging 18 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and one steal while shooting 37.6% from 3-point range with Salt Lake City. He is 18th among all players in the G League in points (576).

Tonje filled the Celtics' last two-way contract spot after the team converted rookie Amari Williams to a standard deal on Thursday. He will now have the chance to continue his career with the Celtics organization after beginning the season in Utah.
